Funding Practice Alliance

The Funding Practice Alliance (FPA) aims to transform the relationship between civil society organisations and funding agencies and to improve good funding practice by grantees and funders within the civil society sector.

The FPA achieves these aims through the following:

It conducts research on issues affecting the sustainability of civil society organisations;
It engages the civil society sector, funders and other relevant stakeholders on issues of funding practice;
It disseminates appropriate information and stimulates debate on relevant issues.

The FPA is made up of the Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT), the Community Development Resource Association (CDRA), Inyathelo – SAIA, and the Rural Education Access Programme (REAP).

“The FPA has embarked on an advocacy campaign to address the challenges faced by the civil society sector and the National Lotteries Board as identified in the “Meeting their Mandates” research report that was published in March 2011. In this regard, the FPA has made a submission to the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry and will continue to advocate for the Portfolio Committee to hold the NLB to account. The FPA is also monitoring developments around the Lotteries Amendment Bill which is expected before Parliament sometime in 2012. “

“REAP has decided to withdraw its active participation in the FPA in order to concentrate on its core work in the education sector. We support their decision and understand the current funding and other pressures facing civil society organisations in South Africa. We would like to thank REAP for the invaluable contribution they have made to the work of the alliance and appreciate their continued support for our collective efforts to improve good funding practice in South Africa.“
